Purpose and Goals
The La Porte Aero Club was organized in 1976 and now has a clubhouse established on the grounds of the La Porte Airport (KPPO). The clubhouse was built in 1991 by the club members. We are promoting general aviation, and do so by giving a scholarship (sometimes more than one) every year to a La Porte county resident going to college for an aviation related degree.
We only have one fund raising activity per year, and that is a fly in/drive in pancake breakfast in August. With these proceeds we seed the scholarship fund and sustain the clubhouse for a year. Usually we serve around 1200 breakfasts each event give or take a hundred. The setup and execution of this event has been honed over the 30 years we have been in existence and is a relatively painless task occupying one weekend.
Each month we have a dinner get together. Sometimes it is by a campfire outside, or inside when weather is inclement. We also have a board meeting that everyone is encouraged to attend. We are by nature, a social club, not a club that owns an airplane. We just have a mutual interest in flying and all sorts of aircraft. Members are pilots, flight instructors and ultra light pilots and people who just love airplanes and aviation related things. We even have one member who is into parachuting, and we boast members from California, and Texas. We always encourage members to bring the kids too!
